HUB 05 · PROBLEM SOLVING

Troubleshooting

Most bad shots get blamed on the machine when the actual cause is grind size, dose, or an uneven tamp. This hub is built to help you diagnose the difference: what a sour, watery, fast shot is telling you versus a bitter, sluggish one, and what to actually change before you consider buying anything new.

What You’ll Learn Here
Diagnose whether it’s technique or equipment, and fix it
01

Sour or Watery Shots

Usually a sign the grind is too coarse or the shot ran under 20 seconds. Here’s how to fix it.

02

Bitter or Sluggish Shots

Often caused by a grind that’s too fine, choking the puck and over-extracting past 35 seconds.

03

Channeling

What it looks like (thin, sour, squirting streams), why uneven distribution causes it, and how to prevent it.

04

Inconsistent Shots

When the same recipe pulls differently every time, the grinder is usually the culprit, not you.

05

Is It Technique or Equipment?

A framework for telling the two apart before spending money on an upgrade you don’t need.
